Spartans Announce new designated player signing.

In the same week that the Spartans clinched their first Majors Cup qualification, they also announce a coup in the transfer market, the signing of new designated player Clint Dempsey from Tottenham Hotspur of the English Premier League.

Dempsey, 30, returns to the USA at the peak of his career, scoring 60 goals in 200 appearances in the most physical league in the world.

The texas native currently serves as the captain for the US national team, and is expected to miss time next season for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

Dempsey will line up alongside Graham Zusi, Tim Cahill and Claudio Bieler to form a potent attack.

Also announced was the release of Camilo Sanvezzo to clear up roster space. Camilo played a large part in bringing the Spartans to the playoffs and majors cup this season, scoring in 9 games in a row down the stretch. He will be missed and the club wishes him well in the future.

Danny Koevermans Anticipated to Return in Week 14

Danny Koevermans, a second year Spartan, is expected to return to action this weekend versus Gateway United. Koevermans, who has been out for a year recovering from an ACL tear, has been match fit for a couple weeks now. Given the international absences of Zusi, Cahill and Mattocks, the road is clear for Koevermans to enter the game as a substitute.

Chairman Alleges Corruption in the BSL, Row with Rose CIty

The chairman today issued a statement regarding alleged corruption in the league concerning the recent transfer drama including Patrice Bernier, Jack McInerny and Camilo.

"With ultimate decision making coming from one conflicted party, with no appeals process or committees, the BSL is no better than some third world dictatorship", said the Chairman.

The Chairman's comments come after Patrice Bernier, who was on his way to the Spartan's training ground after a furious day of bidding, was told that he would instead be sent to Rose City as the league has accepted a lower and inferior bid based on a technicality.

"I really hate the rain, aye", said Bernier.

When asked if the Chairman would be interested in signing McInerny, the Chairman responded "The player is tainted in my opinion and he is not welcome among my squad."

The Chairman then went into a rage, and compared the situation to the transfer drama for Peter Odemwingie, the corrupt Qatari bid for the World Cup in 2022, starving children in Africa, the lack of any new U2 albums and when your oatmeal gets cold.

Transaction Announced

Pending league approval, the Spartans announced that they were re-signing Yazid Atouba and Andy Dorman to the active roster.

Andy Dorman said, "Its a little bit like a roller coaster, one week the gaffer wants me, and the next he doesn't".

Irrespective, both are expected to start this weekend in the first leg of the 2013 Empire Cup. The club plans to drop Teal Bunbury and Gershon Koffie to make way for the new additions.

Today the Spartans announced the addition of defender Hassoun Camara, pending league approval, and the simultaneous release of Andy Dorman.

Transaction announced

Pending approval from the league, the Spartans announce the addition of John Bostock, and the simultaneous release of Yazid Atouba.

Week 2 Build-Up and Lineup

Coming off a strong start to the 2013 season, the Spartans look to defend their undefeated record against the defending BSL Champions, Rose City.

The Spartans have never lost a game against Rose City, and given injury woes, bye weeks and snowstorms hindering the Rose City team sheet, it doesn't look as though that is going to change. The Spartans come in to week 2 with a full strength roster, with week 1 hero Graham Zusi leading the charge.

Congrats Graham!

First Kick 2013, Week One Lineup

The Spartans kick off the 2013 season against Gateway United this weekend. Nothing has separated these two team in the past, as the all time record against Gateway is 0-0-2. The Spartans will look to lead the series in the 2013 opener.

All time scoring leader against Gateway United, Danny Koevermans (with two goals in 2012) will watch from the bench as he continues to recover from his season ending ACL tear last year.

Some new faces, some old at Spartans 1612

With the MLS draft on pause for the weekend break, fans and media pundits have had a chance to reflect and comment on the Draft so far. Sean Johnson and Danny Koevermans are returning for their second season in New York. Johnson, who had 8 points for the Spartans last season, is putting it all on the line for club and country, and is expected to be among the contenders for the U.S. national team when current #1 Tim Howard steps down from national team duty. Koevermans, who was among the leagues most lethal strikers last season, is recovering from a knee injury and isn't expected to return until the summer.

In addition, the Spartans added strikers Claudio Bieler and Carlos Ruiz. Bieler, a 28-year old Ecuadorian striker, is a well known goal scorer, netting 20 last season for LDU Quito. Ruiz, a 33 year old Guatemalan, is seen as a riskier move. Although the ex-MLS player is the 9th leading all time goal scorer in the league, he hasn't played a professional game in over a year.

Fans were disappointed to say farewell to Sair Sene, who perhaps would have been a designated player in New York had he not injured his knee in the 2012 season. Sene was drafted by the Pennsylvania Stoners in the fourth round.

Pundits also considered Camilo Sanvezzo and Darren Mattocks one of their top picks for the most potent offensive partnership in 2013 and see a potential future DP in Mattocks.

Spartans Unveil 2013 Kit

On Thursday, the Chairman released the 2013 kit. In typical Spartans style, the shirt has very little in common with the clubs colors. A throwback to Italy's World Cup kits from the 1970's, the shirt features a bright red "S" and the tricolor logo of BMW Motorsports, a performance tuning division of the clubs sponsor from last season.

The Chairman, recently spotted wearing the kit at 4AM last Saturday while leaving a well known New York nightclub, remarked "Well, I thought it was cool" before he jumped into his car with two unidentified young ladies.

The Spartan fanbase, while amused at the Chairman's antics, felt some dismay that the popular sky blue Spartans logo didn't make an appearance on the kit.

Spartans Announce Second Designated Player for 2013 Season

On Thursday, the Chairman announced the Spartans second Designated Player for the 2013 season - veteran attacking midfielder Tim Cahill.

Cahill gives a "thumbs up" to the Chairman's decision
Cahill, 33, joined the BSL last year after a successful career at Everton in the English Premier League, where he became a fan favorite and the clubs talisman, and 60 caps for the Australian national team. Cahill is best remembered for his two goal game against Japan in the opening match of the 2006 World Cup.

The Chairman said, "I'm just such a big fan of Tim. He's a leader in the dressing room and on the pitch and a good role model for the younger guys as to how they should go about their careers."

Cahill had 3 assists and a goal in 12 appearances for the Spartans last season.

Spartans Announce First DP Selection

On Wednesday, January 16th, the Chairman announced that the club would re-sign central mid-fielder Graham Zusi as its first designated player for the 2013 season. Zusi, signed by the Spartans in the First round of the 2012 draft went on to score 13 points in 20 starts for the Spartans. 2012 was a breakout year for the player, highlighted by Zusi being called up to the U.S. national team by head coach Jurgen Klinsmann.

The Spartans begin the season against Gateway United on March 2nd.
